What do Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston have in common?
Great singers? Icons in the Music Industry? Tragic Deaths?
I didn't want my first Blog of 2012 to be so sullen, but truth be told, I couldn't care less about the "untimely deaths" of celebrities.
The way I see it is this. Someone who has "talent" (and I use inverted commas for the word talent because it is extremely over used in the wrong context these days) is given x amount of millions of pounds/dollars to be the "face" of leading brands.
Of course, this is mostly down to greedy Agents/Record Companies who want to squeeze as much money of their client as possible, but I'm sure I wasn't the first one to say "kala na pathei" upon hearing the news of Amy Winehouse's death.
Granted, thats an insensitive thing to say, as its never a nice thing to hear about someone's death. But at the same time, lets not beat about the bush and give into political correctness. Both Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston had it coming to them. Years of SELF INFLICTED drugs and alcohol abuse are the reasons behind their deaths and its about time the media stopped portraying these people as heroes, and start emphasising the dangers of D&A.
I find it quite disturbing when news companies show images of fans outside the homes of their "heroes", crying their eyes out, mourning their passings. I also find it sickening when half my Facebook friend list have their status as "RIP **insert famous person's name**. You were my inspiration/hero. Thank you for the memories" - Oh, shut up with your RIPing. They didn't know you, they couldn't care less about you when they were alive and now they're gone, they don't give two hoots about you still. Sure, their music may have reminded you of better days, but get over it. Worry about your family/friends who have stuck by you through everything you've been through - and believe me, some of you need to hang your heads in shame given what you've been up to over the years!
When I eventually croak it, I don't expect Eric Cantona or Ryan Giggs to hold a vigil outside my home, in appreciation of my support for them over the years.. GET REAL PEOPLE. These musicians have taken you for mugs!
Look at what we have now. Celebrity gossip magazines, online Blogs with stories of which celebrity is sleeping with who, endless Tweets from celebrities with stuff like "oh, I went to the Grocery store today and someone asked me to sign their forehead". How about the poorly produced gossip shows (often shown on Channel 5). Lets refer to Mr and Mrs Pitt as "Brad and Angelina", seeing as we know that pair of rotters on a personal level. Oh, look, Ricky Martin has come out - well, who friggin' knew he played for the other team?!
Yes, its a rant - and to be honest, anyone who gets offended by this particular Blog is the type of person who needs a reality check. As far as I'm concerned, the day David Beckham pays my mortgage, that drag queen looking Jessie J starts coughing up towards my electricity bill, the Oompa Loompa cockney Adele stumps up for my life insurance is the day when I'll give two s***s about what they get up to in their "perfect lives".
Oh, and before some of you decide to email me giving the spiel about me being jealous and bitter, save the finger exercises for something more practical*. Jealous? No. I am happy with my life, not having to worry about Papps following me and reporters getting into my rubbish bins. Bitter? Perhaps a little. After all, who wouldn't want bucket loads of cash and freebies?
On a final note....Isn't it ironic how over the years, purchases of CD's/LP's/MP3's have all subsequently led to the bankrolling of these artists, thus fuelling their addictions. Now they've snuffed it, rather than going to good ol' HMV up the road, the Youtube-MP3 converter site is on melt down....Stealing from the dead eh? You could not make it up!
